Kidney Dialysis
-
When chronic kidney disease becomes severe, sometimes dialysis has to be considered. When you have end stage kidney failure, your body cannot get rid of extra water and waste products. Dialysis is a treatment that removes waste products and extra water from the blood by filtering it through a special membrane.
-
There are currently over 2.5 million Australians with chronic kidney disease.
-
Approximately 13,500 Australians are on dialysis at present.
-
There are a number of dialysis treatment options available.
-
Dialysing at home (home haemodialysis)
-
Dialysing in a haemodialysiscentre
-
Peritoneal dialysis (dialysis occurring inside your tummy by using peritoneal membrane which lines your peritoneal (abdominal) cavity. This membrane is used to filter waste products and extra fluid from your blood. A special peritoneal catheter is used to transfer dialysis fluid in and out of the peritoneal cavity). Peritoneal dialysis is usually done at home.
Your doctor will discuss different forms of dialysis and help in choosing the best type for you.
